Since the early 2010s, Emerson has begun to identify a market demand for interactive 3D solutions aimed at industrial operator training.
After piloting several proof-of-concepts, Emerson decided to adopt Kairos3D technology to provide learn-by-doing 3D simulations to its customers.

Integrated 3D OTS solutions to help Emerson customers overcome the challenges of designing, commissioning, controlling and operating a process plant safely, reliably and profitably.
The need is to create an advanced training system on top of Emerson existing process simulation engines (Mimic, Aspen Hysis) and DCS (DeltaV) solutions.
By integrating field operators’ activities with the DCS operators in the Control Room, Emerson wants to leverage the integrated OTS-3D platform and enable advanced training on operations practices so that these can be enforced, standardized, and proliferated, from employee to employee, while maintaining consistency by shift, by plant or by site.
The Gilgamesh platform allowed importing any size existing 3D CAD models of industrial assets, and easy configuration of interfaces for real-time data exchange with external systems.
The integrated framework is based on the OPC interoperability layer, with real-time bidirectional links between DCS software, dynamic process simulation engines and 3D models.
Once the 3D models are imported, Gilgamesh provides multiple graphic quality options, from automatic upscale of the realism level of native CAD geometries, to interactive items models with associated animations, and advanced lighting with shadows. Regardless of the selected graphic option, the resulting Digital Twins share the same set of functionalities; the only difference is therefore the visual quality.
Finally, an important aspect of interest for the customer has been the capability to deploy the 3D Digital Twins to any type of immersive device (Head-mounted displays, stereoscopic screens, domes and caves, touch screens).
The integrated architecture supports a new approach for the next generation of workers to protect assets, mitigate risks, and avoid outages.
The solution helps reducing logistic costs and avoiding traditional risks by experiencing scenarios exactly how they would happen in the real production plant.
